Mandela Day, celebrated on July 18, honors the legacy of Nelson Mandela, a global icon of peace, justice, and compassion. Mandela is usually remembered for his contributions to human rights and democracy, but did you know that he was also dedicated to animal welfare and conservation? Here’s an introduction to the animal-loving side of Nelson Mandela and how we can take part in his legacy.

Nelson Mandela's Legacy in Animal Welfare

Nelson Mandela, fondly known as Madiba, was a champion of human rights and a fervent advocate for animal welfare. His love for animals was evident in his own home where he lived with his beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback, Gompo. Four Paws says that before his 27-year imprisonment, Mandela shared a small house on Vilakazi Street in Soweto, Johannesburg, with his family and Gompo.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback was a fitting companion for Madiba. Like Nelson, the breed is known for its intelligence, strong will, and loyalty. Recognized by the South African Kennel Union in 1927, it remains the only registered breed indigenous to Southern Africa. According to The Havana Times (https://havanatimes.org/features/nelson-mandelas-afro-cuban-dog/), it is believed to be a mix of the now-extinct Cuban Bloodhound and the hunting dog of South Africa’s Khoikhoi people.

Mandela's compassion for animals extended beyond his home. He was instrumental in facilitating animal migration routes in Africa and supported various animal welfare organizations. The African Wildlife Foundation shares that on October 4, 2001, he opened the gate between Mozambique and South Africa to let a truck with elephants from Kruger National Park cross into the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. His famous quote shows his commitment to preserving wildlife and supporting animal companions:

If we do not do something to prevent it, Africa's animals, and the places in which they live, will be lost to our world, and her children, forever. Before it is too late, we need your help to lay the foundation that will preserve this precious legacy long after we are gone.

Mandela Day in the Philippines: A Call to Action for our Furry Friends

#MandelaDay2024 encourages individuals to dedicate their time to community service.  United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres encourages committing 67 minutes to symbolize the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for justice. Here in the Philippines, pet lovers can follow Mandela’s example and positively impact the lives of pets and stray animals. Here are some meaningful ways to celebrate Mandela Day 2024:

1. Volunteer At Animal SheltersNelson Mandela International Day - A Person Holding A Dog | Mo and Bear PH

Animal shelters across the Philippines are often overwhelmed with the number of stray and abandoned animals. According to the Philippine News Agency (https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1212583#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Philippine%20Animal,to%20lack%20of%20proper%20shelter.), about 12 million stray cats and dogs are looking for their forever homes as of 2019. Volunteering at these shelters can make a significant difference. You can help with tasks such as feeding, grooming, walking dogs, and cleaning kennels. Many shelters also need administrative support and help with social media campaigns to promote adoption events and fundraisers.

2. Organize Pet Adoption DrivesNelson Mandela International Day - A Woman Kneeling Down With A Dog | Mo and Bear PH

Encouraging pet adoption is a viable way to reduce the number of strays on the streets. Organizing pet adoption drives, either independently or in collaboration with local shelters, can help find loving homes for animals in need. Promote these events through your social media accounts to reach a wider audience.

3. Support Spay And Neuter Programs

Overpopulation of stray animals is a significant issue in the Philippines. Supporting low-cost spay and neuter programs can help control the population and reduce the number of animals living on the streets. You can contribute by donating to organizations like PAWS and Biyaya Animal Care that offer these services or volunteering to assist in organizing and running spay and neuter clinics.

4. Promote Responsible Pet Ownership

Responsible pet ownership is still lost on some Filipinos. You’ve probably heard stories of pet owners failing to clean up after their pets in public places or not providing proper veterinary care for their companions. The good news is, you can help educate other furparents. Share information on topics such as proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and the importance of spaying and neutering. You can do this on social media or through daily conversations.

5. Provide Foster Care For Cats And Dogs

Many shelters operate at full capacity and rely on foster homes to provide temporary care for animals. By becoming a foster parent, you can offer a safe and loving environment for animals until they find their forever homes. Fostering also helps animals become better socialized and increases their chances of being adopted. CARA Welfare Philippines and PAWS offer Foster a Pet programs for those looking to make a difference in one animal’s life.

6. Donate Supplies To Shelters

Animal shelters often have limited resources and rely on donations to provide care for their animals. Donating supplies such as pet food, bedding, toys, and medical supplies can greatly benefit these shelters. Organize donation drives in your community or within your circle of friends to collect essential items and deliver them to local shelters.

7. Advocate For Animal Rights

Advocacy plays a crucial role in improving animal welfare. Engage in campaigns to support laws and policies that protect animals. This could involve signing petitions, participating in peaceful protests, or working with local government officials to create and enforce animal protection legislation.

8. Adopt, Don't Shop

This is a cliche, but still can’t be said enough. Choosing to adopt a pet from a shelter rather than buying from a breeder helps reduce the number of animals in shelters and gives a homeless animal a second chance at life. Adoption also discourages the unethical practices of puppy mills and backyard breeders.

9. Choose Cruelty-Free And Eco-Friendly Products

Respecting animals means recognizing their rights to live free from harm and exploitation. This includes not supporting industries that abuse animals for entertainment, such as circuses and dolphin shows, and choosing cruelty-free products. Mo and Bear supports eco-friendly pet products such as Happy Life for your pet grooming needs.

10. Properly Care For Your Pets

Ensuring that your own pets receive proper care is crucial for their well-being. Choose the right cat food or dog food, get rid of fleas, go on regular veterinary check-ups, and give them adequate exercise. Providing a safe and loving environment helps pets lead healthy and happy lives.

Show Love To Animals On Mandela Day 2024

Mandela's legacy teaches us the importance of compassion and its impact on the world. Mandela Day 2024 offers an opportunity to positively impact the lives of animals and pets as the global icon did. By volunteering, advocating, donating, and promoting responsible pet ownership, we can contribute to a better future for our furry friends. As we celebrate Mandela Day, let us remember the words of Madiba and strive to preserve his legacy of compassion and kindness towards animals.
